HELP STOP THE SEAL HUNT

Canada's annual seal 'hunt' is the largest slaughter of marine mammals on the planet.

In 2006 the Canadian government allowed fisher'men' to club and shoot at least 354,344 seals in the North Atlantic just to earn a few superfluous extra bucks by selling stolen seal skins.

In fact 98 percent of the seals killed were three months of age or younger, and veterinary reports indicate that many seals have been skinned while still conscious and able to feel pain. (Source: Humane Society of the United States)

This blood sport survives solely through propaganda, such as; "seals are responsible for eating and depleted the cod stocks" - whereas the truth is that seals eat the marine life who prey upon the cod [in others words; more seals = more cod]. The true culprits for the collapse of cod 'stocks' are fisher'men who greedily over-fished the waters with the DFO's blessings. These mass executions of cod for profit were compounded by the loss of their own food supply due to climate changes as well as pollution - which has also impacted their reproductive capabilities.

BETRAYAL OF TRUST

BEWARE so-called deceptive 'eco'-tourism scams on the ice flows; on 04.17.2008 in a documentary purportedly showing "all three sides" of the issue, a certain major news broadcaster let slip that many of these operations aren't so ecologically-friendly. In fact, these operations use the opportunity to further exploit seals and make them even more vulnerable to their demented assaults. These 'eco'-tourism businesses acclimate both the parent and newborns to the presence of humans who gain their trust through the giving of food and friendly pettings. Soon after all the tourists have left, these 'eco-tour guides' [aka. sealers-in-disguise] then go out on the ice beating and shooting those who were taught to trust them. Victims who don't run for lack of fear increases 'crop yield'.

In 2008 'anti'-cruelty [slash and wait] guidelines, introduced with the deceitful intention of making the seal massacre appear more 'humane' [or more appropriately, less cruel], were quickly shown to be nothing more than a pathetic joke as sealers were caught on video right away and throughout this glorified torture fest repeatedly violating these unenforceable 'rules'. No punishment has been suffered by these kiddie-killers, but pro-life/anti-child abuse activists were, as usual, harassed and assaulted by sealers as well as officials; so much for government and industry claims of the 'hunt' being "humane", "well-managed" and "supervised".

To end the seal 'hunt', the animals need YOUR voice.

Send a polite yet firm message to Prime Minister Stephen Harper and tell him that you oppose the government-subsidized seal 'hunt' and want him to be honest with Canadians in regards to thie inexcusable slaughter and end it immediately.

Handwritten letters have more impact than email, especially since many government officials mass delete anti-sealing emails because they are apparently either too craven to read them or lack the integrity to hear what Canadians truly want. Send your letter today and remember letters to parliament are postage-free!

2008 POLL RESULTS:

The majority of Canadians not only want the seal 'hunt' ended, but they also want the government to stop wasting our tax-dollars on subsidizing the annual baby-massacre and propagating their seal-slaughter agenda in the EU.

To this very day both the government and sealers have failed to raise even one legitimate/factual point in support of this unjustified massacre (because there aren't any) which, as with all other exploitation industries, relies on propaganda as well as good people doing nothing to continue to operate. This is not an issue of 'us verses them', it is a matter of right vs wrong and it's time for politicians and residents in certain parts of the country to stop playing these stupid games - real lives are being lost, and so is tax-payer money.

Another way you can show your support for seals is by making your views heard in the opinion sections of local papers as well as on news sites in the comment sections on articles related to the seal hunt. Get busy and take a stand against sealers, their friends and family members who troll sites to propagate their bloody kiddie-killing hobby.

FAMOUS QUOTES

"True human goodness, in all its purity and freedom, can come to the fore when its recipient has no power.
Humanity's true moral test (which lies deeply buried from view), consists of its attitude towards those who are at our mercy; animals.
And in this respect humankind has suffered a fundamental debacle, a debacle so fundamental that all others stem from it.
"
-Milan Kundera

  EVENTS

"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."
-Martin Luthor King Jr

Just as with any other AR organization, WAAG demos are peaceful (you can check with the Windsor Police Department if you wish) and reserved as a rule - we do not use flashy theatrics or chant slogans. We are there to be approachable and have our signs seen to get the message out. We enjoy interacting with the public and answering your questions about animal issues, as well as hearing feedback - which is almost always positive.

The absurd notion of the 'violent animal activist demonstration/mob' is a fear-mongering farce often propagated by those with something to lose; people who profit from the exploitation of others and would rather that absolutely no attention be given to the private side of their practices (operations which are, by default, extremely violent, and noisy from the shrieks of their 'property' as they suffer and...eventually...die) as well as apologists and others of similar elitist persuasion who wish things to remain status quo.

We encourage everyone to come out to our demos, whether it be to participate or simply just to get to know us.

"The fate of animals is of greater importance to me than the fear of appearing ridiculous."
-Zola

Bake Sale for Haiti Orphans

[01.21.2010]

A photo will be added as soon as one can be located...

Vegan bake sale for Haiti went great today! Thanks to all who helped! Nearly $200.00 was raised with the help of University of Windsor students to aid in the rebuilding of an orphanage that would protect children from being sold to less than reputable individuals/organizations.

Fur Free Friday (International).

[11.27.2009]

A photo will be added as soon as one can be located...

2009 marks WAAGs inaugural official participation in the International Fur Free Friday day of protest in defense of fur-bearing animals (normally we have an information table or small demonstration at the University). We held our demo outside of Lazares "Fine" Coats (formerly Lazares Furs...)
Fur Free Friday was originally an American anti-fur event held on the day after Thanksgiving, one of the country's busiest shopping days before Christmas. The day has since grown to be an international protest against the fur industry and in 2008 more than 100 anti-fur demonstrations took place worldwide.
The demo was quite successful as we had around 13 people show up, as well as reporters from not one, but three media outlets! We would like to thank everyone who came out and helped give voice to the exploited victims of this tacky fashion fad as well as am800, Atv, and The Saint (St Claire College publication) for coming out and doing a fine job of covering this event. As always, the support of Windsorites passing by was great indeed and very much appreciated.

Truth In Advertising Demos; Fur Is NOT Green.

[02.14.2009]

Picture was to have been sent by friends from TO but years later and still no submission...

WAAGers once again weather the chill in their warm, animal-free clothing to send the message that fur is in no way ecologically friendly or even remotely necessary.
We Thank everyone who showed up for this event, for making it out to our demo, as well as the citizens of Windsor who, again, gave this issue strong support and show that they definitely aren't buying into the FCC's shameless propaganda.

[12.13.2008]

No picture coming, years later, doubtful one will be submitted...thanks!

WAAGers brave the frigid temperatures, while keeping warm in their non-animal derived clothing, to counter the Fur Council of Canada's propaganda with the truth using signs of their own (a billboard just is not in our budget; advocating for the protection of others is economically antithetical to exploiting them.)
With supportive honks from passersby, quite literally every few seconds, Windsorites show their not buying the fur industry's pathetic and intellectually-insulting ECO-SHAM.

For the facts on fur that the Fur Council of Canada wants everyone to ignore, please visit: CrueltyIsNotGreen.com and let AdStandards Canada know how disgusted you are with the FCCs blatant lies.

A special thanks goes out to Brian Cross of the Windsor Star for coming out, am800 for the generous amount of coverage they gave us, and also to Gavin Michael Booth for his video commentary on a certain infantile controversy which arised from our [standard] press release.

UPDATE: BOTH the furis[n't]green.ca and Lazare's furs signs have [finally] been taken down [end of season] But, atleast for now, good-bye to bad rubbish! Feel free to continue letting AdStandards know how you feel about the industries false claims -- we certainly will be. Winter2009-10 did not see a repeat of Windsorites having their intelligence insulted by this billboard, though lazres did by advertising in the form of a glorified infomercial on am800 - which must have made everyone there feel cheap, dirty and used.

Pride Day Tables

Circus {Anti-Slavery/Pro-freedom} Demos
WAAG, along with a few members of SMART [FIXED LINK], peacefully -as always- demonstrating and educating outside Shriners Circus.
In regards to the Shriners' proclamations that the animals are 'well cared for', the tell-tale signs* of PTSD displayed by these captive Ele-slaves tells a different story. As 'proof' for these claims, they state that the Humane Society showed up 3 times; but what they deceitfully failed to mention is that short of catching 'trainers' in the act of viciously assaulting animals, under the current backward laws, there is next to nothing that the HS -or OSPCA- can legally do -especially before the circus rolls out of jurisdiction with their slaves.
IF they'd simply keep the elephants entertained by feeding them between shows, they'd be too preoccupied to sway...but this would also require keeping the elephants hungry before putting them on display...a show between shows in the parking lot.

A side-by-side comparison of living/traveling quarters;
[bottom-left] here we have the elephants trailer/mobile prison [with its "state-of-the-art air-conditioning" -- two rusting slots on each side].
[bottom-right] and then we have the cramped ramshackle rolling hovels the shriners degrade themselves into lodging.

For more information on why everyone needs to oppose animal entertainment/slavery, visit: www.Circuses.com

In 2008 the Garden Bros circus, which was scheduled to be in Windsor prior to the shriners, cancelled without alerting any media organization, thus exposing their lack of respect for Windsorites - we apologize on their behalf. Thank you, am800, for being unbiased and allowing the issue of cruelty to animals in circuses to be openly addressed by the public.

In 2009, the apparently reformed Garden Brothers brought a poorly advertised non-animal based circus to the WFCU center, WAAG graciously provided free positive advertising for this event. Despite Ian's comments, only positive advertising is good advertising; hence the consistently dwindling number of people who attend animal-based circuses {a trend which began years before the financial crisis began!} and people walking away when they realize that elephants and all other animals used at these shows are abused slaves[who can be seen for free in the parking lot].
If the Garden Brothers will sign a pledge to never use nonhuman animal acts in their circus again, WAAG will gladly provide much more free advertising and sell tickets to their Windsor shows in the future.

One of the biggest complaints we hear from parents attending the circuses is that they didn't want to bring their children to any circus at all, but certain underhanded tactics forced their hands - how can a parent tell kids "no" when they have "free" tickets in their tiny little hands?? That this industry employs dirty tactics such as this, circumventing parents by having teachers distribute deceitful tickets at schools, reveals their desperation by exploiting children’s naivety. We can only wonder why the schools, meant to educate and protect children, have helped push the circuses agenda.

windsoranimalrights.com now has a section dedicated to circuses which can be found here along with some coverage of the 2010 demo.

Earth Day Tables
Doing our part to educate environmentally conscious citizens about the abysmal GLOBAL eco-destruction caused by animal agrikulture (true eco-terrorism).

EarthDay2004-5?
[04.22.2007]
A brief lull inside the main tent, LOTS of people, much more noise; sore throat from talking, WATER!!
[04.27.2008]

Earth Day 2008 we collected over 6 pages of signatures from people in favour of amending the OSPCA Act [bill c50] to give legitimate protection to animals and to have them given higher status than that of mere possessions.
Thank you to everyone who helped us raise $84.00 for the Cruelty Investigation Unit of WECHS in memory of Kiki.

[04.26.2009]

Earth Day 2009 went great as it is always a pleasure interacting with the public and hearing feedback. The only negative of the day was the committee's poor decision not to serve eco-friendly [saintly by comparison] vegetarian food this year in favour of serving only eco-destructive flesh. We heard many complaints about the absence of healthy vegetarian options from attendees as they visited our table[even from one who was eating a hotdog].

[04.26.2009]

Earth Day 2010, despite the weather, had a rather good attendance.
We gave our usual, and recieved our usual in return.
Although there was a decent enough vegetarian chili available, there were still many mutterings over the lack of vegetarian options and the presence of eco-damaging flesh products - not our fault - but we will keep pestering.
Thank you Jackie for coming out to help, you did great.

Please contact Windsors Earth Day organizers to politely ask them to consider removing flesh and all other ecoUNfriendly animal products from the events menu to make it more friendly to the environment as well as to send a proper message to attendees about the environmental consequences of certain dietary choices.

Canada's Inexcusable Shame; the seal "hunt"
Outside the Windsor/Detroit tunnel exit, with the great people of SMART [FIXED LINK] stationed by the entrance on the US side, WAAG gives voice to Canadians by saying we want an end to the senseless annual seal massacre[and that the rest of the world is watching].
EVERY year WAAG sends out multiple press releases to media in the area -- ask yourselves, are news outlets doing their (supposedly unbiased) job if, year after year, they refuse to cover these annual news stories??

[03.15.2009]
[03.15.09] March 15th is International Day of Protest Against the Annual "Canadian" Seal Massacre {thank you Alicia & co.}. Joining other groups across Canada as well as the rest of the world, Windsorites gave voice to both the seals and the majority of our fellow Canadians here in our industrious city as well as those across the country. This demo took these demonstrators from waags normal routine of standing across from the Windsor/Detroit tunnel to an interesting mobile one which began at Riverside/Ouellette and wound our way around the downtown core where we handed out information and collected signatures for the petition to end this blood sport. No media coverage, as usual, despite media releases being sent out...[?]
[04.27.2009]
[04.05.2009] WAAG held a demo outside the tunnel exit with SMART positioned on the opposite end. As is usual, we received many supportive honks and waves. Later that night we held another event, and we would like to give our sincere thanks to the Gourmet Emporium for so generously opening their doors for WAAG to screen Nigel Barker's [Americas Next Top Model] A Sealed Fate?. We had no less than 35 people show up and watch this excellent film. Despite TWO media releases being sent out about these events, only am800 allowed Windsorites to have knowledge that they were taking place, so, thank you am800 for not protecting special interest groups within Newfoundland over the interests of your listeners.

Free copies of the film are available upon request! Just send us an email with "A Sealed Fate?" in the subject line and include your contact information.

To expose bear bile farming cruelty, the traveling campaign features a mechanical life-like bear display which is a replica of one of China's caged bears. This mechanical bear's eyes move, a low moan emanates from within him and what appears to be bile leaks from a tube in his belly (the bile is actually cold tea). Bear bile is used in China for a variety of products including shampoo, wine and traditional Chinese medicines.
